Is Gender A Spectrum?

84 posts in this topic

As long as someone is comfortable in their own skin I don't care how they label themselves.

I often battle in my own mind if I would have been happier if I had been born female but I wasn't and that's that for me. I'm content enough to be known as the "girly guy" among my friends.

There is a difference between gender and sex. Sex is genetically what you are XX (female) or XY (male). Gender is masculine and feminine.

As for my option yes there is a spectrum to how masculine and feminine you are. I for one express didn't levels of the two on different days myself.

This gender thing is, to put it frankly, a clusterfuck. The way I see it is that there are two genders. Male and female. Acting more "feminine" or more "masculine" doesn't mean that you are now a Pancake or an Attack Helicopter. If you are male and wanna go female, that's fine (and visa versa)! But, anything outside of that is just ridiculous and it doesn't make sense.

Gender, as both sides of the argument will often scream, is a social construct. This means that the number of genders is a matter of culture. In the West, as of right now, there are two. Until I am presented with a good, thought-out reason for another gender, I will continue to support there only being two recognized genders, and possibly an "alternative" sort of selection for check-boxes. As far as individuals are concerned, I will refer to them how they want me to refer to them, assuming it isn't Xi or they or something else equally difficult/dissonant.

Gotta draw the line somewhere lol

yeah that's about my opinion on it. I never really understood how things worked regarding alternate gender...

And not to get hated on but I remember an image I saw that describes a very Mercenary and almost rude way of putting the whole 'bathroom law' controversy, but also one that I think makes sense.

bathroom-meme-1024x711.jpg

That's how we define gender in the western world, and to an extent the more actually relevant part of why things like Bathroom laws are up to debate, because people think it's weird for penises to go in the vagina bathroom (although people don't seem to hate the other way around NEARLY as much). It's again VERY completely and totally NOT PC and possibly bordering on transphobic, but it's true to how our minds think of it, and the simplest way to nip the controversy in the bud.

GENDER is a social construct to some extent because of the fact that what it means to 'act as your gender'. If our society tended to 'males' wearing dresses and 'females' playing football, no one would bat an eye nearly as much.

SEX is the concrete measure that our social assumption of gender is built around, and the real tangible dichotomy that bases it. If there were 5 different sexes we'd probably have 5 genders based around each set of parts.

I REALLY hope I don't start some kind of mud slinging fest from this.

Honestly, part of me says just desegregate bathrooms and put that part of the nonsense to rest. Nearly all multiple occupancy public restrooms have stalls with locking doors, so those who are so hung up on privacy really have nothing to worry about someone else accidentally seeing them with their pants down, a rapist who would ambush strangers in the bathroom doesn't strike me as likely to give a damn about sneaking into the "wrong" bathroom, and if you're that paranoid your child will be molested in the bathroom, how about being a responsible parent and escort your child to the toilet instead of trying to mandate the behavior of others?

For me, there are three different kinda of people, male, female, and hermaphrodites, if you got a dick im calling you a guy, if you have a vagina im calling you a girl, if you got boobs and a dick then ill allow you to decide what you wanna be, if you are a guy who wants to be a girl ill call you a girl when you make the procedure offical, there are not 300 dam genders, you either are a guy or a girl, sex change or not, there is no other options, and as for The gender bathroom policy, it was never a problem before and no one knew if the girl next to you used to be a man or not, ever since gay rights became legal now the whole u s is saying we dont want this we dont want that, it was never a problem before but now it is? Look you go into a bathroom to piss or shit, i really dont care what gender you are

I pretty much agree with Kozmo's interpretation.

I'm transgender. I've spent a great part of my life feeling like I was assigned the incorrect body.

Transgender, I would say from my perspective, is not a gender in itself so much as a psychological phenomenon where one's body does not mirror the mind inside. It can cause serious problems, and gender dysphoria is a very real thing.

However, from my own experience and perspective, I must assert that being transgender is not a gender unto itself.

I identify as a girl/woman, I feel like one, and above almost all else, I wish I had been assigned the right mix of chromosomes to truly be one.

Since the last part is, for the foreseeable future, not something that can be done via medical science, I have resigned myself to a physical sexual 'reassignment' in order for my exterior to match what I feel on the inside.

This does not make me something new and different, and while I can't speak for every trans person out there, I would prefer to just 'be' a girl, instead of wishing for it. I list myself on-site as transgender because I know that I am striving for something I doubt will be fully accessible within my lifetime, and to myself and others, that means I will never be a 100% biologically female person, and I have made my peace with that fact, and wear it openly.
